We Salute Carrie Jernigan

Payless Shoes is going out of business, but one Arkansas woman found a silver lining. While picking up her kids’ back-to-school shoes, Carrie Jernigan’s daughter asked if she could buy an extra pair for a classmate. Inspired by her daughter’s generosity, Carrie had an idea.

As I was checking out I just said, “How much for the rest of the shoes in the store?”

Carrie and her family bought all 1,500 pairs of shoes that day and is now giving them away to needy kids. Carrie embodies the words of Ruist philosopher Zhang Zai who wrote, “All persons under Heaven who are tired, crippled, exhausted, sick, brotherless, childless, widows, or widowers are my siblings who are helpless and have no one else to appeal to.”
